Ah, Suikoden II. The original was flawed in only one way - It was incredibly short. This sequel improves on that by doubling the length of the original. It isn't just in time taken to finish that Suikoden II has improved though. Oh no, the graphics have been upgraded substantially (but they still retain their charm); the Army Battles have been heavily modified, sometimes making you feel like you've accidentally put Vandal Hearts into your PS instead; and, while this is a continuation of the original, we have a brand new story in a new location, with just enough of the original's cast returning to make everyone feel comfortable. Like the original, you have 108 "Stars of Destiny" to collect to aid you in your war against the invading Highland Kingdom. You fight for, and eventually end up leading an army (of your naming) that fights for the restoration of the City States of Jowston, an alliance of six small states broken up by the maniacal Prince Luca Blight of Highland, whose only desire is to wage war. |

Graphics [9/10] |
I just love this sort of look. Cute sprites running around a very colorful world. Packed with little details. |
Sound [8/10] |
Battle effects do the job. Music is lovely (especially the flashbacks to the original). |
Gameplay [9/10] |
Two different sorts of battle (Army and Party). Simple turn-based battles don't spoil the enjoyment. |
Replay Value [High] |
108 characters to collect, most of them entirely optional. Some excellent side-stories as well. |
PAL Conversion [Very Good] |
Small borders and no discernable speed loss. Excellent job (pay attention Sony!). |
Pros |
Top storyline, 108 characters, the beauty of the traditional RPG |
Cons |
Can't explore much of the original's map; a bit buggy in places. |
